Renger van der Zande's return to the F3 Euroseries has proven to be a success by winning the weekend's second and final race at the Circuit de Catalunya. The Dutchman's Motopark Academy car crossed the line over four seconds ahead of Alex Sims as Basil Shaanban completed the podium.
Victory in the race of the Formula 3 Euro Series race at the 2.977 kilometres long Circuit de Catalunya on Sunday went to Renger van der Zande (Motopark Academy). The Dutchman secured the maiden win for the Oschersleben-based team already in its first season in Formula 3.
He was followed home by Alexander Sims (Mücke Motorsport) and Basil Shaaban (Prema Powerteam). Shaaban became the first Lebanese driver to score a podium finish in the world's toughest junior race series. Jules Bianchi (ART Grand Prix) ended up fifth in the 16th season round and remains in the lead of the points' standings.
The battle for first place was only exciting on the first couple of metres. Shaaban had a good start and almost took the lead. However, pole-sitter Renger van der Zande only just succeeded in keeping the Lebanese at bay. After that, the Dutchman, who had taken over Atte Mustonen's drive at Barcelona, drove an undisputed victory home. Shaaban held on to second place for a long time and turned down the attacks by Alexander Sims. The British rookie only succeeded in overtaking Shaaban on lap 24.
"I am really happy that I managed to win here," commented race winner van der Zande. "We are a new team and we are working hard to achieve results like these. I did my second event for Motopark here and first had to get used to the Kumho tyres again. Now, I am very optimistic for the two remaining events of thus season."
