Championship leader Jules Bianchi has clinched another pole position to place himself in the perfect position for this title-deciding weekend. Having pitted even before the end of the session, the Frenchman's ART held the top spot as championship rival Christian Vietoris qualified fifth.
In one of this season's most thrilling qualifying sessions of the Formula 3 Euro Series, Jules Bianchi (ART Grand Prix, 1:07.007 minutes) came out on top, setting the fastest qualifying lap time for the fourth time in 2009. The Frenchman demoted Andrea Caldarelli (SG Formula, 1:07.072 minutes) to second place, 0.065 seconds down. For the Italian and his team SG Formula, this was the best qualifying result of the year.
The second row on the grid for tomorrow's 15th season round at the 2.977 kilometres long Circuit de Catalunya will be shared by Alexander Sims (Mücke Motorsport, 1:07.097 minutes) and Henki Waldschmidt (SG Formula, 1:07.117 minutes).
Qualifying remained exciting until the chequered flag was out. Only two minutes before the end, Jules Bianchi managed to outpace surprising erstwhile leader Andrea Caldarelli. The final attacks by his rivals weren't enough to punt the French driver of the ART Grand Prix team off pole position.
With the one championship point that he has earned as the reward for the fastest lap time in qualifying, he is now 17 points clear of Christian Vietoris (Mücke Motorsport, 1:07.348 minutes), who is second in the points' standings. The German ended up fifth in qualifying.
