Mika Mäki was able to hold on and score his first victory of the 2009 season in a much delayed first race of the weekend at Brands Hatch. Behind the wheel of his Dallara-Volkswagen, the Finn crossed the finish line half a second ahead of compatriot Valtteri Bottas.
Christian Vietoris finished third behind Bottas, who was the best-placed rookie. Championship leader Jules Bianchi, however, retired after a collision with Tiago Geronimi. His margin over second-placed Christian Vietoris is still 19 points.
Bianchi and Geronimi collided when the ART driver attacked the Brazilian on the outside of Paddock Hill Bend; the duo hit the barriers at high speed and caused the race to be interrupted - both drivers escaped unscathed. As DTM qualifying was set to take place immediately after the Formula 3 Euro Series, the race was not resumed until 4:10pm (with the orignal start time having been 11:45am).
Mäki won the re-start behind the safety car; he had also been in the lead when the race was interrupted and finally drove home to a safe victory for the Signature-Plus team.
"My first victory of the season feels really good," the winner said. "Too bad it is only too late; at the start of the season we lacked speed and a little bit of luck. The key to success here at Brands Hatch was the start, when I managed to overtake pole-sitter Valtteri Bottas."
