Sims heading home on a high

Alex Sims will enter the Brands Hatch circuit as a race winner this weekend after claiming his maiden Formula 3 Euroseries success at the Nürburgring last time out. The 21-year-old Englishman may have had a season of ups and downs but is hoping to carry his race-winning form to more strong results from the final eight races.

With Brands Hatch, Barcelona, Dijon and Hockenheim all hosting a couple of races each before the end of the season, there is still plenty of time for the Mücke Motorsport driver to impress again after a brilliant first win in Germany. "Having been the first rookie who has done so doesn't mean a lot to me," he said.

"For me, achieving something is important but I don't mind if somebody else has done the same earlier. Prior to the season I set myself two goals: I wanted to win the rookie title and secure a top-six position in the championship - and I still want to do so, although I have to admit that Valtteri Bottas has opened a small gap in the Rookie Cup and currently seems to be in great form."

The top six target certainly remains a realistic goal, however, with Alex currently seven points away from it and eighth overall after a less than consistent first half to the year. "In the first races, things didn't run as expected," he admitted, "therefore I was very disappointed; I made several mistakes but learned my lesson and improved. With hindsight, you even could say that starting the season with two rather moderate race weekends wasn't too bad as it resulted in an extraordinary learning effect."

Sims also thanks team-mates Christian Vietoris and Sam Bird for his success after much help before the season began. "They proved to be particularly helpful during the off-season tests," Alex explained. "After all, I had no Formula 3 experience at all, then."
