Sims clinches first F3 victory

16 August 2009

Britain's Alexander Sims celebrated his first Formula 3 Euroseries race win at the Nürburgring on Sunday. The Mücke Motorsport driver overcame the might of three ART Grand Prix cars to take the chequered flag by being the first car into the first corner.

Before the first corner, the Mücke driver, who won the McLaren Autosport BRDC Young Driver Award last year, overtook team-mate Christian Vietoris, who eventually came home second. Mika Mäki's Signature car completed the top three. In the points' standings after twelve races, leader Jules Bianchi has a margin of 25 points over Vietoris. Bianchi finished fifth in the Eifel race on Sunday.

On the final lap, Bianchi came under attack from ART team-mate Esteban Gutierrez; eventually, the Mexican was beaten by 72 thousandths of a second and crossed the finish line in sixth place.

The race started with a safety car phase, after Pedro Enrique's Manor, Basil Shaaban Prema Powerteam and Nick Tandy's Kolles & Heinz Union cars retired after a collision.

"It was a good day for me," said first-time winner Sims. "The important things were my good start and the fact that Christian left enough room for me in the first corner. In the second half of the race, I was able to pull clear and drive a relatively safe victory home."
