Mücke Motorsport led proceedings with a top two lockout in free practice at the Nürburgring on Friday. Local driver Christian Vietoris headed the timesheets from British team-mate Alexander Sims with HBR's Tom Dillmann best of the rest in third. Championship leader Jules Bianchi wound up seventh for ART Grand Prix.
Vietoris finished the two and three-quarter hour practice session with a best lap time of 1.23.618, edging out Sims by only 66 thousandths of a second. Monaco's Stefano Coletti was next up behind the top three as Mexico's Esteban Gutierrez rounded out the top five. Spaniard Roberto Merhi was sixth and the final car ahead of the championship leader; the Frenchman Bianchi's lap of 1.23.976 leaves him three and a half tenths down on the quickest.
Three more Mücke cars finished 10th, 11th and 13th - courtesy of Bird, Wittmann and Mustonen - with ex-Red Bull F1 reserve driver Brendon Hartley in 20th position for Carlin. In 23rd place out of the 25 cars, Johan Jokinen finished one place behind England's Nick Tandy but recorded the highest number of laps with 34 to his name.
The qualifying session in Germany will last for half an hour and starts at 6:20pm local time (BST +1 / GMT +2).
