At the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, Jules Bianchi (ART Grand Prix, 1:20.706 minutes) claimed his second pole position of the 2009 season. The points' leader of the Formula 3 Euro Series outpaced his Finnish team-mate Valtteri Bottas (ART Grand Prix, 1:20.838 minutes), who was second.
Christian Vietoris (Mücke Motorsport, 1:20.847 minutes), runner-up in the points' standings of the Formula 3 Euro Series, needed only 0.009 seconds longer than Bottas for his fastest lap, ending up third. Fourth place was taken up by Roberto Merhi (Manor Motorsport, 1:21.116 minutes).
Jules Bianchi claimed the top position four minutes before the end of the session when he took first place away from Valtteri Bottas. At the end of the 30 minutes' qualifying, 13 drivers ranked within a second of the Frenchman's fastest lap time. Among them was returnee Renger van der Zande (Motopark Academy, 1:21.328 minutes).
Tom Dillmann (HBR Motorsport, 1:21.957 minutes), the second returnee in the world's toughest junior race series, ended up 17th in his first qualifying of the year.
