Dead-heat in Norisring practice

26 June 2009 / Results

There was a tie between Britain and Finland at the top of the timesheets after first practice at Germany's Norisring. Sam Bird and Masters of F3 winner Mika Mäki led the way, with the same lap time down to the thousandth. Alex Sims made it two British drivers in the top three, finishing within a tenth of the top pair.

As the first session got underway in the early afternoon of Friday, Mücke Motorsport's Bird was officially handed first place having set his time first; both he and Mäki's Signature-Plus car lapped the anti-clockwise track in 49.371 seconds.

Valtteri Bottas rounded out the top five in the one-hour session although his ART team was making use of an innovative rear wing configuration on its cars. Team-mate and championship leader Jules Bianchi, who took pole last time out at Zandvoort before being penalised, finished practice in eighth spot.

Another name to look out for this weekend is Nick Tandy, who joins the Kolles & Heinz Union team at late notice as replacement for the departed Carlo van Dam. Needing to adapt to the car as quickly as possible, nobody completed more laps than the British F3 star, who placed 21st.
