Bird heads practice in Germany

29 May 2009 / Results

Sam Bird has recorded the benchmark time in first practice for this weekend's German meeting at the Lausitzring. The Englishman topped the timesheets from Mücke Motorsport team-mate Alex Sims with Frenchman and Hockenheim Race 2 winner Jean-Karl Vernay rounding out the top three.

With a fastest lap time of 1.17.492 at the Eurospeedway, Bird headed the final classification of the day by just over a tenth of a second as Christian Vietoris and Jules Bianchi, of Belgium and France respectively, finished the day fourth and fifth behind Vernay. Finn Mika Mäki, fastest in the morning's test, fell to sixth position in the one-hour official practice session. Championship leader Stefano Coletti, who won the first race of the season just under a fortnight ago, finished the day in 11th spot.

Another name to note was Brendon Hartley, the Red Bull Formula One test driver rounding the day off in eighth place. Several cars were cautioned during the session as drivers used tarmac not considered as race track, in areas which will be examined closely by race stewards over the course of the weekend.

It is an early start for the field on Saturday, with the half-hour qualifying session due to kick off at 8am local time (GMT +1).
