
The first pole position of the new year was claimed by Sam Bird (Mücke Motorsport, 1:33.657 minutes). During the season opener of the Formula 3 Euro Series at the 4.574 kilometres long Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg, the 22-year old Briton was 0.044 seconds faster than Stefano Coletti (Prema Powerteam, 1:33.701 minutes). The second grid row for today's first race of the season is being shared by Mika Mäki (Signature, 1:33.882 minutes) and Roberto Merhi (Manor Motorsport, 1:34.226 minutes).
In an exciting qualifying session, Sam Bird claimed his top position among the 28-strong field only in the final minute. The top three drivers were followed by Roberto Merhi, Jules Bianchi (ART Grand Prix, 1:34.297 minutes) and Basil Shaaban (Prema Powerteam, 1:34.312 minutes). The Motopark Academy team, a new entry in the Formula 3 Euro Series, enjoyed a good debut in the world's strongest junior racing series with seventh place for Finnish driver Atte Mustonen (1:34.341 minutes). The best-placed rookie was Valtteri Bottas (ART Grand Prix, 1:34.433 minutes) in eighth place.
