Spaniard Roberto Merhi who has become a member of the Mercedes-Benz young-gun programme, this year, is going to contest the 2009 Formula 3 Euro Series season. The 17-year old was signed by Team Manor Motorsport, thus being teamed-up with the Brazilians Pedro Nunes and César Ramos that joined the British Squad just recently.
"Having Roberto in our team is good news", said Manor Team Principal John Booth. "Last year, he demonstrated his competitiveness by winning races in both the Formula Renault Eurocup and the Spanish Formula 3."
Merhi is regarded as one of the most gifted young guns in motor racing. For the major part of the 2008 season, he was a Formula Renault Eurocup title contender but in the end, he had to settle for coming fourth. In the Western European Championship, however, he did better and finished runner-up. In addition, he contested selected rounds of the Spanish Formula 3 Championship and won two of these races. At the wheel of a Hitech entered Dallara-Mercedes, the Spaniard also competed in the two most prestigious international Formula 3 events: the Masters of Formula 3 at Zolder and the Macao F3 Grand Prix.
The young driver gathered his first single-seater experiences as early as in 2006, at the wheel of a Formula 3 vehicle. In 2007, he finished fourth in the Italian Formula Renault but at the same time, he also demonstrated to be an all-round tracing driver. Apart from his involvements in the Italian Formula Renault Championship and the Eurocup, he also raced in the Spanish Formula 3, the Spanish GT Championship and contested selected kart races.
