Oakes joins Carlin at Hockenheim

23 October 2008

Carlin Motorsport are aiming to end the 2008 F3 Euro Series season on a high this weekend, with a new driver line-up at the Hockenheim circuit in Germany. Carlin's British F3 driver Brendon Hartley, who competed with the team at the last Euro Series round at Le Mans, will be joined by fellow F3 racer Oliver Oakes.

20 year-old Oakes returns to Carlin this weekend having competed with the team in the 2006 Formula BMW UK championship. Oakes raced alongside Hartley in the 2007 Formula Renault Eurocup championship, and finished in a strong 12th place in the overall standings, in one of the most competitive seasons in the series.

Despite only competing in selected rounds of the 2008 British F3 season and racing in a small team, Oakes demonstrated his true potential at the final round of the season, snatching pole position from eventual champion Jaime Alguersuari.

Brendon Hartley makes his third outing for the Carlin F3 Euro Series team in Hockenheim, having competed at Barcelona and Le Mans, and has already taken two top ten finishes for the team. The 18 year-old Red Bull racer was a contender for the 2008 British F3 title at the final round of the season, and his record of five race wins in 2008 is only equalled by 2008 champion Alguersuari.

Speaking about his first race in the F3 Euro Series, Oakes said, "It's nice to be joining Carlin again, although I'm jumping in at the deep end; on a track I don't know and on tyres I've no experience of! It's going to be a great learning experience; Carlin is obviously a good team, and it will be good to gauge myself against other drivers. I'm sure it will be quite a steep learning curve, but I have Brendon as my team mate and I'm really looking forward to driving in the same team as him, and learning as much as I can."

Team Principal Trevor Carlin added, "Brendon is on top form at the moment, he has made a real difference to the Euro Series team and given us invaluable feedback on the Kumho tyres which is helping us improve race by race. Oli is a good friend of the team and we are delighted to give him the chance to compete in the final round of the season. It will obviously be a tough weekend for him, but I believe he has the ability to help the team move forward."
