Volkwagen enjoyed start of the season
18 April 2008In the 2008 season kick-off, Volkswagen secured their best Formula 3 Euro Series result of all times. In the only fifth race weekend the Wolfsburg based brand contested in the planet's most competitive young-gun series, Edoardo Mortara (Signature-Plus) finished third in both rounds. Thanks to these successes, he and Mika Mäki (Mücke Motorsport) are joint championship leaders, now.

"I didn't even dream about holding the championship lead following the Hockenheim rounds," beamed Mortara. "I'm sure that there will be many more successful races for Volkswagen."
Prior to the beginning of the 2008 season, Volkswagen had contested just four Formula 3 Euro Series race weekends. In 2007, they made their debut at the Nürburgring, with two R.C. Motorsport cars entered for cars for Maximilian Götz and Jonathan Summerton. Later in the season, the Volkswagen pairing was joined by Marco Holzer (AM-Holzer Rennsport) whose single-seater also was powered by a Volkswagen engine.
For the 2008 Formula 3 Euro Series season, however, Volkswagen have entered an impressive fleet of eight cars, with four cars being run by Signature-Plus and the other four by R.C. Motorsport. And the French team around Philipe Sinault made the better start into the season. In their first race with the Volkswagen power units, they finished third (Mortara), fourth (Franck Mailleux) and fifth (Jean-Karl Vernay) respectively. While Maximilian Götz came sixth, thus being the best placed R.C. Motorsport driver.
"With two podium finishes, it was a more than satisfying Formula 3 Euro Series season kick-off, for Volkswagen," VW Motorsport Director Kris Nissen said enthusiastically. "Furthermore, the fast lap times underlined the downright competitiveness of the two-litre engine provided by the Volkswagen Group. Compliments to everybody who has been involved in this project and an extra plaudit to Edoardo Mortara for two great races."
