Van der Zande dominates race 2 at Hockenheim
13 April 2008 / Results / PhotosRenger van der Zande (Prema Powerteam) won the second season round of the Formula 3 Euro Series. At the 4.574 kilometres long Hockenheimring Baden-
Württemberg, the 22-year old Dutchman was 4.556 seconds faster than secondplaced Christian Vietoris (Mücke Motorsport). The two Volkswagen drivers
Edoardo Mortara and Franck Mailleux (both Signature-Plus) occupied third and fourth place. In the overall classification, Italian Mortara is leading after two rounds, tied with Mika Mäki (Mücke Motorsport). Both have ten points. Finnish driver, Mäki, retired after a collision with Jean-Karl Vernay (Signature-Plus).
Renger van der Zande made the best of his pole position and didn't lose the lead until the chequered flag was out. After Charlie Kimball (Prema Powerteam) stalled at the start, Jens Klingmann (R.C. Motorsport) and Henkie Waldschmidt (SG Formula) ran into the car of the American. The safety car was out for three laps so that the debris could be removed. After the restart, Vietoris failed to take race leader van der Zande in the remainder of the 24 lap race. Third-placed Mortara managed to close up to Vietoris, but didn't succeed in taking over second place. Vietoris scored his maiden podium finish in his second race in the world's strongest junior race series.
Renger van der Zande commented on his win: "Throughout the winter, we have been working every day almost until midnight. Today, that has paid off. The key to success: a little bit of luck and a quick car."
