Carlin Motorsport enjoyed an encouraging start to its Formula 3 Euro Series campaign today, with a promising performance at the first test of the season in Valencia, Spain. Joining 27 other Euro Series cars on track, Rodolfo Gonzalez and Richard Philippe took their place in the Carlin cars for their first taste of the European championship and finished the afternoon session 11th and 12th respectively.

Having been announced as the team's first F3 Euro Series driver last week, French born racer Richard Philippe made his debut with the team in Valencia today. The 18 year-old, who has only one day's experience in the F3 machine, was joined on track by test driver Rodolfo Gonzalez who has previously raced in the British F3 series.

In warm but windy conditions, the team took to the track for the first session of the day. Venezuelan driver Gonzalez made the most of his new tyres to set the 10th fastest time of the morning. Getting to grips with his F3 Dallara, Philippe was 21st on the time sheets. Both drivers made further progress in the afternoon, to set the 11th and 12th fastest time of the session on old tyres, when many teams chose to run with new rubber. The combined times from both sessions saw Gonzalez and Philippe 10th and 21st quickest respectively.

Reflecting on his first day with the team, newly confirmed Carlin driver Richard Philippe said, "I'm pleased with how we did in the test today. The F3 car is still a fairly new experience for me, so I spent much of the day acquainting myself with the car's characteristics. Consequently I think there is still quite a bit of improvement to come from both me and the car tomorrow. I'm working well with the team and feel very comfortable out on track, so I'm looking forward to the second day of testing tomorrow."

Speaking about the team's first day in F3 Euro Series, Team Principal Trevor Carlin said, "I'm delighted with the team's performance today. Obviously we have a great deal of experience in Formula 3, but the Euro Series is a new challenge for us. There are a number of very competitive teams and drivers in the championship, and I'm very pleased that we have been on the pace from the very first session.

"The times this afternoon were incredibly close, but both Rodolfo and Richard were quick on old tyres and impressed the team with their performance. For Richard this is only his second day in an F3 car, so I think he can be very pleased with his times. We will be looking to build on this tomorrow and make further progress."

The team will be back on track for the second day of testing at the Valencia circuit tomorrow.
