In the maiden Formula 3 season of Team SG Formula, rookie Henki Waldschmidt from Den Haag, Netherlands, is going to race one of thee three Dallara-Mercedes single-seaters entered by the squad. The 19-year old is member of Toyota's Young Driver Programme (TDP) and advances from Formula Renault to the Formula 3 Euro Series.
Just two years ago, Waldschmidt moved from karting to the Formula Renault 2.0 to make his first steps in car racing for the Prema Powerteam - in the Italian Championship and the Eurocup. At the end of his rookie season, the young Dutchman finished 15th in the Eurocup and sixth in the Italian Championship.
No news in his second year of car racing: again, Waldschmidt contested the two Formula Renault series with Prema Powerteam. With a win at the Nürburgring on the one hand but several difficult weekends on the other, he finished seventh in the Eurocup. And in the Italian Championship, he secured the same result with two race wins under his belt.
For Toyota, who have been supporting Waldschmidt since he made his single-seater racing debut, these results were enough to convince them of his skills - and they secured their protégé a seat in the new SG Formula squad.
"Advancing to the Formula 3 Euro Series with two years of Formula Renault experience under your belt is just great," beamed Waldschmidt. "This is a major chance for me and I'll give my very best to make use of this opportunity. Now, I'm already looking forward to the first tests for my new team, SG Formula, held in mid-March at Valencia.
