Signature switches to Volkswagen

Signature switches to Volkswagen

04 December 2007

Signature is going to contest the 2008 Formula 3 Euro Series season with four Dallaras powered by Volkswagen engines. Apart from the French squad, Team R.C. Motorsport also will enter four Dallara-VW Formula 3 cars.

"It's our goal to score points in every single round and secure our first podium finishes, this year," explains Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. "Still, I'm well aware that succeeding in the Formula 3 Euro Series will be anything but easy and that we will have to execute a lot of work on the way to realising our goals."

To have the chance of doing so, the Wolfsburgers have signed Signature in addition to R.C. Motorsport who have already cooperated with Volkswagen in 2007. The French squad around Team Principal has been competing in the Formula 3 Euro Series right from the start. In 2003, they relied on Renault engines, one year later, they switched to Opel and from 2006, they used Mercedes engines.

In the past seasons, Signature proved to be open-minded about technical challenges. In 2005, for instance, they entered the SLC R1, thus trying to make an end to the monopoly of Italian chassis manufacturer Dallara. The SLC R1 turned out to be particularly convincing in the wet and on street circuits. At Spa-Francorchamps, Signature driver Fabio Carbone came very close to securing a podium finish and secured fourth place and at Pau, he crossed the finish line in fifth position. Now, the Signature engineers and technicians with extensive Formula experience under their belts are supposed to make a vital contribution to the enhancement of Volkswagen's new Formula 3 power unit.

The biggest success of the team based in Bourges, France, was the third place secured in the 2004 Formula 3 Euro Series season by French driver Nicolas Lapierre. In 2006, all the Signature cars were raced by Formula 3 rookies, with Italian Edoardo Mortara delivering in particularly fine style. He won two races and proved to be the 'Rookie of the Year'.

Neither Signature nor R.C. Motorsport have made the decision regarding their 2008 driver line-up, to date.
