Vernay wins chaotic last race of the season

Jean Karl Vernay (Signature) decided the finale of the Formula 3 Euro Series at the 4.574 kilometres long Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg in his favour. In an exciting race, he overtook erstwhile leader Christopher Zanella (Motopark Academy) on the final lap. The Swiss rookie crossed the finish line in second place from guest driver Mirko Bortolotti (Carlin Motorsport).

The race started on a damp track that dried out more and more in the course of the 40 minutes. Jean Karl Vernay started with rain tyres, but came in to change to slicks during the race and moved up all the way to the front of the field. His second victory of the season still allowed him to move up to fifth in the final points' standing which makes him the best-placed Volkswagen driver.

Rookie Christopher Zanella already started with slick tyres, just like Mirko Bortolotti, and moved up from 19th on the grid to a podium finish. Bortolotti, who took over Brendon Hartley's Dallara-Volkswagen at Hockenheim and contested his first racing weekend in the toughest race series, scored his maiden podium finish at his first attempt.

Valtteri Bottas (ART Grand Prix) ended up fifth behind Marco Wittmann (Mücke Motorsport) which was enough to win the rookie title.

Jean Karl Vernay (Signature): "The race was really crazy. I got slicks with 14 laps to go and was well able to move up to the front. I am happy that I still ended up fifth in the points' standings with this victory because that was my goal for the weekend."
